From a consumer's perspective

Namely, mine.

I need to explain a little bit about myself before I introduce Sonya.
I am by no means a couture critic but I have always loved fashion. This passion for fashion had made me a compulsive and impulsive buyer. The clothes I buy may be categorised as classic although I also have a penchant for the unusual, provided they are timeless. I choose not to follow seasonal fashion trends but often wear clothes purchased several years earlier and never fail to receive compliments.

I particularly appreciate clothes which can be dismantled and reassembled to modify the look. Timeless and Versatile are the two key words that describe my purchasing habits

I have to also explain that I don't need to search in great detail to find what interests me. I can walk into a shop, even just stand in the doorway and, in a strange way, I will "see" without actually looking. So when I recently attended the Fashion Exposed Trade Show in Melbourne, I walked through the aisles displaying hundreds of exhibits and was drawn to just one. Sonya's collection.

So, from a consumer's persepective, let me present Sonya Kraan.

About Sonya Kraan ...

After being drawn to Sonya's stand, I chatted to her about her collection and found her to be not just talented, but delightful and charming. Her collection was classic, unique and versatile, all of which appealed to me.

For someone so talented, it is somewhat amusing to note that Sonya apparently didn't always demonstrate perfect sewing techniques and had experienced some mishaps in her sewing class at school. It was after her 2 year stint at Swinburne, where she studied Costume, that she followed through with a 4-year Bachelor of Design (Fashion) course at RMIT and graduated with 1st Class Honours.

Maybe the interest wasn't there when she was in school but the talent was obviously always present. Judging by the pieces in this collection, Sonya probably gets her design sense from her artist father and her predilection for detail from her scientist mother.

The result is fabulous.

"Riding with the Storm Clouds" is Sonya's debut collection. No doubt we will be seeing a lot more from this emerging young designer in the months and years to follow.
